Eaglesham is notable for its planned village layout, which was designed in the 18th century by Alexander Montgomerie, the 10th Earl of Eglinton.
The village was established in 1769 and is one of Scotland’s earliest planned villages. Eaglesham’s unique radial street pattern and picturesque setting earned it the status of a Conservation Area in 1960. Additionally, Eaglesham is known for being the birthplace of John McAdam, the renowned engineer who developed the macadam road surface, an innovation that significantly improved road construction and travel.
