A Catrine History
Catrine was built in 1787 around one of Scotland’s earliest cotton mills, founded by Claud Alexander in partnership with industrialist David Dale. To power the mill, the Catrine Voes were constructed — a system of reservoirs, a weir, and tunnels that created the largest water-powered industrial system in the world at the time. In 1828, two massive 50-foot iron water wheels, known locally as the “Lions of Catrine,” were added, and they became one of the most powerful engineering works in Britain.
A Matter of Fact
Dugald Stewart, a renowned philosopher and Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, lived at Nether Catrine House on the south bank of the River Ayr. The poet Robert Burns famously “dinner’d wi a lord” there, adding to the village’s cultural heritage.
