A Hurlford History

Hurlford, a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, has its roots in the 19th century industrial boom. Originally a small rural settlement, it expanded rapidly with the rise of coal mining and ironworks in the area, becoming a key contributor to Scotland’s industrial growth. The village was once thriving with miners, foundry workers, and railway builders, giving it a strong working-class identity that remains part of its character today. In the present day, Hurlford is a quieter, close-knit community, known for its local football club, scenic surroundings, and its position as a gateway between the larger town of Kilmarnock and the rural beauty of Ayrshire’s countryside.

Hurlford United Football Club

…founded in 1912, has been a central part of village life for over a century. The club achieved national recognition in recent years, notably winning the Scottish Junior Cup in 2014. Hurlford has also been home to several professional footballers over the years, underlining the village’s strong sporting spirit. Perhaps most notably, local legend Derek McCulloch who went on to manage the team after his playing career.
