A Matter of Fact
Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, was born in Darvel, East Ayrshire, Scotland, on 6 August 1881.
He later went on to study medicine in London and made his groundbreaking discovery in 1928, which earned him a Nobel Prize in 1945.
Darvel takes great pride in this connection, and you can even find a commemorative plaque in the town honouring Fleming and his contribution to modern medicine. So yes – tiny Darvel has a very big claim to fame!
